What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda (ahh-your-vay-dah) is the world’s oldest medical science, originating in ancient India around 3,000 B.C. The word “Ayurveda” literally translates to the “Science of Life” in the ancient language of Sanskrit.

Ayurveda is a complete approach to mental, physical and spiritual health. Its idea of the healthy human isn’t someone who just gets by, but instead someone who radiates radical health—someone who is a warrior: powerful, confident, energetic and focused.

To do this, Ayurveda relies on several key sciences:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Metaphysics (the science of consciousness)
  • Botany

While modern medicine operates on a treatment model, waiting for individuals to develop symptoms and then prescribing treatments, Ayurveda believes in proactively cultivating a rockstar way of life in order to maintain health and happiness.

Ayurveda believes in the body’s ability to heal itself with the assistance of a variety of non-toxic therapies:

  • Plant medicine
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Healthy lifestyle

It provides each of us practical guidelines to understand our unique mind-body blueprint and predict how different practices will affect us individually. It believes that we can each radiate perfect health by using holistic tools that are optimized for our unique mind-body blueprint.

There are 8 total branches of Ayurvedic medicine:

  1. Internal medicine
  2. Pediatrics
  3. Psychiatry
  4. ENT
  5. Surgery
  6. Toxicology
  7. Geriatrics
  8. Reproductive health

Compiled over thousands of years, generation after generation through painstaking patient observation, Ayurveda documents:

  • 11,000 diseases
  • 6,000 plant-based medicines
  • 700 medicinal plants

Ayurveda, yoga and meditation are part of the same mind-body optimization philosophy originally documented in ancient Vedic texts, known as the Vedas. To achieve optimal mind-body power, the Vedas recommend using a combination of Ayurveda, yoga and meditation.

At Veda Warrior, our goal is to simplify, modernize and democratize this timeless healing wisdom and to make it more easily accessible to all Americans. To see what Ayurveda's ancient knowledge can do for your mental health, get started with our free Stress Quiz
